Total Request Live
This was a cooperative work with my nephews, Brandon and Shawn, and their friend Kenzie. It went kind of like this:
"What do you think I should draw?"
"A sun! Draw a sun!"
"Okay." scribblescribblescribble "Now what?"
"A flower!"
scribblescribblescribble
"Now draw a... a... a... table!"
"Yeah. With food on it!"
scribblescribblescribble
"Now draw a butterfly!"
"Yeah! A butterfly!"
scribblescribblescribble
"Anything else?"
"Now draw you!"
"Me?"
"Yeah! Draw you!"
scribblescribblescribble
"Now draw all of our names!"

Little Shepherd
"But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
though you are small among the clans of Judah,
out of you will come for me
one who will be ruler over Israel,
whose origins are from of old,
from ancient times."
Therefore Israel will be abandoned
until the time when she who is in labor gives birth
and the rest of his brothers return
to join the Israelites.
He will stand and shepherd his flock
in the strength of the LORD,
in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God.
And they will live securely, for then his greatness
will reach to the ends of the earth.
And he will be their peace.
- Micah 5:2-8 (NIV)

Dark Lord of the Sith
Some days I have more time to sketch than others... I may or may not revisit this particular Sith lord at another time.

A Series of Unfortunate Elephants - IV
A long, long time ago I started writing a story called "I Swallowed an Elephant Whole". It was about a circus elephant that gets startled by a mouse and then stampedes towards the crowd. It heads straight for a little boy who opens his mouth to scream, when the next thing he knows, he's swallowed the elephant whole. The rest of the story describes how the various circus personnel try to extract the elephant. Sadly, I never finished that particular story, and I've lost what I had written. This is about what I envisioned, though.

Stuck in the Snow
This is not an unfortunate elephant (though its incompleteness arises from an unfortunate event)... I went to work yesterday morning and it was snowing... and while I was at work it continued to snow.... and snow... and snow... (this is not typical weather for us)... By mid-morning the road back home was closed and it has stayed closed. I am stuck 45 miles away. I didn't have my normal gear, so I quickly scribbled this using just the mouse on the computer I had available. Hopefully I'll get home tonight and be able to do something better tomorrow...

A Series of Unfortunate Elephants I
I'm starting a new series. This is the first one. We'll see how it goes from there. This was inspired by the old joke:
Why do elephants paint their toenails in rainbow colors?Credit goes to Lukas Bischoff for the font - Sketch Rockwell - that I used on the jar.
...So they can hide in jellybean jars.
Ever see an elephant in a jellybean jar?
No?
Works pretty good, doesn't it?

You Got Any Avocados?
A duck goes into a bar, and waddles confidently up to the bar.
"Er. Can I help you?" Asks the bartender.
"Yeah. You got any avocados?" Asks the duck.
"Uh. No. This is a bar." Says the bartender. "We don't have any avocados."
Disappointed, the duck waddles back out.
The next day, the duck returns to the bar. Once again he waddles up to the bar and asks the bartender, "You got any avocados?"
"I told you yesterday, buddy. This is a bar; we ain't got any avocados." Says the bartender, a little perturbed.
Once again, the disappointed duck waddles back out.
The next day, the duck goes back into the bar. Again, he walks up to the bar and asks the bartender, "You got any avocados?"
Angrily, the bartender reaches over the bar, grabs the duck by the neck and yells in its face, "Look, buddy! I told you yesterday, and the day before... This is a bar! We. Don't. Have. Any. Freaking avocados! If you come in here one more time and ask me for avocados, I'm going to nail your bill to that bar!"
The bartender drops the duck and it leaves, visibly shaken.
The next day, the duck comes back in, walks up to the bar and looks up at the bartender expectantly.
The bartender glares at the duck and with menace in his voice says, "Well?"
"You got any nails?" Asks the duck.
"No." Growls the bartender.
Smiling brightly the duck says, "In that case, you got any avocados?"

Blaster Ray
One of my favorite parts from the original Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio series goes something like this:
Zaphod: Listen. If it will help you to do what I tell you, baby, imagine that I've got a blaster ray in my hand.
Pilot: You have got a blaster ray in your hand.
Zaphod: So you shouldn't have to tax your imagination too hard.
Unfortunately, you'll have to tax your imagination just a bit with this drawing, as I didn't have time to make it look any better than it does.

Space Girl - Color
I went back and added some detail and color to the Space Girl sketch. This one was a lot of fun to do. It had been a while since I'd done anything in color, so I spent a little time on this over the past few days. I'm really happy with the results.

Pickin' Out the Good Ones
You know, I just noticed this guy looks similar to my unfortunate hiker character. It's not meant to be him, and if you go back to those earlier posts I'm sure you'll see the differences. Just wanted to be clear on that point, because I may bring back the hiker a little later on and didn't want anyone to think this was part of the series.

The Angry Lop
Not feeling well today... really think I'm getting a head cold. It's always easiest to fall back on cute and cuddly on days like this. I had a couple of "good" ideas for some new doodles, but they'll have to wait until I'm feeling better.

The Grand Vizier
I don't know why, but in movies the king's most trusted adviser is always a bad guy... and he always looks something like this. Would you trust this guy?

Alien Portrait
So, I had a really cool idea for a doodle, and spent about an hour working on it before I realized that it was utter garbage and it wasn't a really cool idea after all. So, after deleting that one, I spent the next hour and half with creator's block and couldn't come up with anything worth posting. So, I just picked the best of the worst, and here it is. Enjoy!

Das Boot am Strand
If you're following my blog at all, you've probably noticed I've been doing a lot of work using hard lines lately. I'm using a fairly basic brush in Photoshop to accomplish this. It's simply a solid black brush with shape dynamics responding to the pressure of the pen on the tablet... meaning that when I press harder the line gets wider. It's not unlike sketching with a Sharpie marker. I really like the effect of the bold strokes, but it isn't easy to work with as every minor flaw in every stroke is accentuated by darkness of the line.

June Bug
When I was a kid we'd spend summers down at my dad's house in San Diego. Occasionally june bugs would get into the house at night and keep us from sleeping, because they looked like this. I swear... I'm not exaggerating! My sisters can back me up on this.
Ok... I'm probably exaggerating a little bit. But this is how I remember them anyway.
